Some say the pieces by minimalist composer Philip Glass are the most unfriendly to listen to; however, that doesn’t mean that he isn’t still badass.
Glass Box: A Nonesuch Retrospective is a 10 disc showcase of Glass’ scores, compositions, symphonies, and other material. Out via Nonesuch, this showcase also includes a booklet, with composer’s notes, photos, texts, and a shit load of street cred.
The booklet also features liner notes from Paul Simon, David Bryne, and David Harrington, among others.
Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino, Brooklyn’s king and queen of dance punk have released a single with RCRD LBL, “A Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare.”
The track is a bit of a detour from their debut, “Matt & Kim;” yet, it’s refreshingly different and proves to critics that this due is far from burning out.
Catch them in November at Middle East Upstairs.

Set for release on October 7th, Another World includes five tracks, opening with “Another World,” followed by “Crackagen,” “Shake That Devil,” “Sing For Me,” and “Hope Mountain.”
On the EP, “Antony sings of a disappearing world.”
This EP is a preview of their full length due in January, The Crying Light.
Recently, Antony has been working with the likes of Bjork and Hercules and the Love Affair. Most notably, Antony was in the Leonard Cohen documentary, I’m Your Man.
No Age’s experimental punk has brought LA’s Smell and gritty noise rock to the forefront of today’s music scene.
As much as I love the duo, their new music video for “Goat Hurt” is both awesome and confusing. I mean no one bikes in LA, unless you’re poor…or even worse: an immigrant.
It’s my last full day down in the South and it has been a trip. Not only do I finally have an full understanding of what hospitality means, but I also feel a little changed myself.
Maybe, the heartless, self-absorbed Jen Choi that everyone has come to love has finally found that last shred of warmth deep down in her heart. Maybe, I’ll stop sneering at tourist on Newbury and start giving money to the poor or something…and maybe…I won’t.
Coming in September, a local Winston-Salem band, Autopassion might grace Boston with their dreamy indie rock. Their two gigs (at a house party and a local hair salon) rivaled Allston’s classic basement party rock shows: good music, great people, good times.
Currently, Autopassion (pictured) is recording and in the process of moving to Brookly’s Bed-Stuy. If you’re in the area, I strongly encourage you to check them out. If you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse of these guys, make sure you ask them about Four Men and A Baby NASCAR. Still hesitant?
Listen some of their side projects. Lead, Andy, dabbles in electronica (MRS.) and the much talked about Timothy Poovey has his own side project.
From Chapel Hill, The Huguenots, made the journey to The Werehouse where they debuted a new song, “On My Doorstep” which was one of the many highlights of the night. Dressed to impress, these Southern gents embodied early Beatles pop with some modern panache. Treat yourself to a listen on their myspace.
Shortly after updating jenchoi.muxtape.com, I, along with many other frequent users of the internet’s most beloved public playlist network, were welcomed to Muxtape.com with this message:
Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.
Launched just this past spring, Muxtape was indeed far too good (and illegal) to be true. Apparently, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) finally found a way to shut down Justin Ouellette’s, former employee IAC/Vimeo, creation.
Yet, we can’t point our fingers at RIAA just yet. In an article on VALLEYWAG:
In an accidentally published investment term sheet, Ouellette estimated three months of hosting would cost $18,000. That’s about $72,000 off the mark, enough to eat through Lodwick’s $95,000 investment and shut down the site…
So, what to do? Well, the folks at the Muxtape Facebook Group seem undaunted by the recent events and suggest switching to the other (legal) Muxtape: 8 tracks to “keep the mixes coming!!”
“Hello Goodbye” – The Beatles (1967 Capitol) Magical Mystery Tour
Contrary to many predications, Jen Choi made her connection in Memphis and arrived, in one piece, in good ol’ North Carolina.
North Carolina has certainly lived up to its moto: “Esse Quam Videri” (To be rather than to seem).
My favorite destinations thus far, Reynolda Gardens (pictured) and the legendary Werehouse in Winston-Salem. Of course, it’s only day two but day one was filled with activity.
Tonight, Jen Choi & the Life is heading to Chapel Hill, the home of Southern folk, and power pop, where The Huguenots are playing. If you’re in the area, catch them, Saturday, at The Werehouse.
Friday, a Winston-Salem favorite, Autopassion is playing a house party! Fans of The Strokes and The Walkmen would love this up and coming act. Just recently, the band has transplanted to my old stomping grounds in Brooklyn.
“Great Indoors” – Autopassion (2005 unsigned) Is A Tedious Dialogue
Miraculously, I have actually found the time to update this blog, so be grateful! See you on the 25th, Boston!
Before I leave for the dirty dirty south on Wednesday (which may or may not mean another five days free of Jen Choi & the Life), I have graciously decided to update my muxtape for your listening pleasure.
“Rescue Rescue” – Criteria (2003 Initial Records) En Garde
Looking at the cover of Criteria’s (Stephen Pederson) En Garde, one would assume he was just another pretty face that happened to know how to play the geeeeetar; yet, his 2003 release is remarkable. If you’re a fan of Saddle Creek and especially Cursive, you will not be disappointed by this Omaha native.
Check out tracks from his 2005 release, When We Break, with Saddle Creek Records at Criteria’s myspace.
Sort of like Hanson but not terrible, Fiasco is a product of Brooklyn’s noise rock scene. This trio of 16 year olds (seriously) have played with acts like No Age and just recently played SXSW. They are also featured in The New York Times article, “Mama Was A Riot Grrrl? Then Pick Up The Guitar and Play,” about “kids rock.”
Indeed, it has been five days since my last post and I am sure everyone is thirsting for the wisdom of Jen Choi & the Life (and some free mp3s on the side).
While away, I have been working like a crazy maniac, talking to the Weekly Dig, moving to Brookline, hosting a friend from LA, packing for a trip to North Carolina, and getting sick…in the middle of August.
But, what has the rest of the world been doing?
- Bradford Cox (AKA Atlas Sound) released a new virtual 7″ but also accidentally leaked demos from Atlas Sound’s coming Logos LP and Deerhunter’ s “Weird Era Cont.,” the surprise track on their coming Microcastle album.
Sucks, right? What’s even worse is that there were apparently childhood photos of Atlas Sound on his unprotected MediaFire account…how embarrassing.
-Baltimore’s dream-pop duo, Beach House went to Europe and decided to play an upbeat version “Heart Of Chambers,” from their Devotion album, during a Black Cab session. The two will also be touring with Dan Deacon, The DeathSet, and 24 other Baltimore acts on Deacon’s Round Robin Tour.
-The Cool Kids released an amazing new single, “Pennies.”
-Some incoming freshman at Princeton thinks she can tell everyone how to live their life just because she knows how to read and shit.
Senator Obama’s top include Fugees, The Rolling Stones, U2, and Kanye West. On the other hand, Republican candidate McCain enjoys the sounds of ABBA, The Beach Boys, and Frank Sinatra.
Judging solely on musical tastes, Obama seems like the more worthy presidential candidate. Even though both sound like suburban dads that watched MTV with the frat brothers back in college, if I had to make a choice, I guess Obama is the cooler of the two, I mean he listens to Kanye…I bet he wear shutter shades.
“Good Life” – Kanye West ft. T-Pain (2007 Roc-A-Fella) Graduation
