I remember the summer of 2007 and CSS at the Fonda. Going down as one of the best shows I’ve ever been to, it’s hard for me not to appreciate everything that comes from this Sao Paulo electro party band.
Yet, I have matured and CSS’ magic has faded with the seasons. CSS (2006 Sub Pop), the group’s self titled debut album, was amazing, but their recent release, Donkey (2008 Sub Pop) is lackluster at best.
Their video for “Rat is Dead (Rage)” only makes this fact more painfully clear.
With random camera angles and a black light, this only reminds me of the numerous times when I have shown up, sober and late, to Allston’s many theme dance parties looking for the bathroom and only getting the awkward run around by the party’s highly intoxicated attendees.
The dead rat at the end only accentuates this traumatic experience and urges viewers grow up and call it a night.
Since its mistake of a beginning, the American public could always depend on Fox News for some quality, hard-hitting, Republican bullshit; however, Fox’s recent slip-up is unforgivable.
After the rising star’s, Russian model Ruslana Korshunova, Sunday suicide, producers at Fox some how found it completely appropriate to air and re-air footage of the tragic beauty’s lifeless, blood-covered face as it lay on the Manhattan asphalt.
This goes beyond Fox’s reputation of being outrageous and digs into its lack of a moral foundation.
David Clark, the weekend programming EP at Fox News, apologized for the images.
Dubbed Iceland’s “Frank Zappa,” Mugison (or Örn Elías Guðmundsson – whatever’s easier for you to pronounce) is releasing a new album Mugiboogie (Icepac Recordings) this week!
Mugison is a one-man band armed with a Mac and a guitar. After studying in London to become a record producer, Mugison traveled back to Iceland where he recorded 2004’s Mugimama (Is This Monkey Music?) off 12 Tonar Records.
That year, at the Icelandic Music Awards, Mugimama was named Album of the year with track nine, “Murr Murr,” winning Best Song.
Clinic’s, of Liverpool, use of vintage keyboards creates a fast-paced sound that conjures memories of aggressive 1970’s rock and roll. Very aggressive…almost sexy?
Capturing my college experience (thus far) perfectly, “Basement Party” reminds me of early 90’s party rap. And by that I mean bike shorts…Will Smith…and general awesomeness…a possible theme for an Allston dance party? I hope so.
I really don’t know why these geniuses split. According to an inside source, there was some irreconcilable internal boo-boos that made life hard. Whatever.
Go to their myspace and download their tracks fo’fwee!
Call me heartless, but sweet, lovable, teddy bear boyfriends are nice to have around but usually too boring to keep around. According to an article published in The New Scientist:
The traits are the self-obsession of narcissism; the impulsive, thrill-seeking and callous behaviour of psychopaths; and the deceitful and exploitative nature of Machiavellianism. At their extreme, these traits would be highly detrimental for life in traditional human societies. People with these personalities risk being shunned by others and shut out of relationships, leaving them without a mate, hungry and vulnerable to predators.
But being just slightly evil could have an upside: a prolific sex life…
Sometimes, when I stare out the window of my poor ol’ Boston brown stone, I look to the west and wonder how California is holdin’ up without me.
Thanks to the LA’s No Age, Dean Spunt and Randy Randall (ha) have assured me that the left coast is still up to no good. With amazing albums, Weirdo Rippers (Fat Cat 2007) and Nouns (Sub Pop 2008), an awesome live show, and now a fantastic music video, No Age is well on their way up.
Check out the Andy Bruntel-directed video and catch No Age with High Places and Abe Vigoda at Middle East Downstairs on July 14th!
According to Thursday’s article in The Charlotte Business Journal, the great American company, Anheuser-Busch, will stop selling its alcoholic energy drinks, Tilt and Bud Extra, after being found guilty of advertising to underage consumers in 11 states including California and New York.
But what about our beloved Sparks?
Well, in August 2007, Miller Brewing Co. (as well as others) was mentioned in a letter filed by 30 attorneys general to the feds expressing their concern with the marketing of several drinks including Sparks.
Fortunately, representatives of Miller Brewing Co. and others took no action and chose to check out their awesome Sparks mouth instead.
I mean, it’s like drinking from a battery! I say, do away with Tilt and Bud Extra but NO ONE IS TAKING MY SPARKS!
Yeah, it tastes like sugary plastic, makes your heart race, and at 350 calories per can, probably isn’t the most healthy drink, but it’s still the best…and that’s all that matters.
As a part of the Miller Lite Music Series, legendary post-punk rockers, The Hold Steady will be playing a free (yes, free) show tonight at Paradise Rock Club with Aberdeen City.
But, here’s the dilemma:
a. one must be 21+ to be served alcohol
b. Miller Lite means alcohol
c. tonight’s show is part of the Miller Lite Music Series
So, if a=b and b=c, then unless you’re 21+, no Hold Steady at the Dise tonight for you (unless you have a fake…which is a felony).
Thusly, for the majority of my readers, who are probably prepubescent suburban teenagers, ask your parents to drive you down to the city on Sunday to catch The Hold Steady at McCarren Pool at 2PM.
“Chillout Tent” off Boys and Girls in America (Vagrant Records 2006)
Belvedere, known for being oh so smooth and tasty, and Vincent Gallo, known for his musicBuffallo ‘66Brown Bunny doing dirty things with Chloe Sevigny (!?), have teamed up to entice alcoholic hipsters everywhere!
It was during my break at work when I flipped through the pages of Spin Magazine’s June 2008 issue to see Gallo’s face pressed against a bottle of Belvedere.
Apart from the print campaign, Gallo and photographer Terry Richardson filmed a 30 second commercial that left me in quite the stupor…i just don’t get it.
