8tracks: June and Gloom

June 22, 2009 · Leave a Comment

satin_bowerbirdWell, it’s been summer for only about 2 days since school got out. In this week’s forecast expect showers, showers, thunder, lightening, showers, and about 15 minutes of sun on Wednesday or Thursday.

Everyday’s a cozy coffee day in Allston so, curl up with your favorite cup of java and let your imagination run wild because someone somewhere’s probably frolicking in the sun.

This month’s playlist: June and Gloom–

Boo Hoo” – Marvin Rainwater (1994) Whole Lotta Woman
“Die Slow (Picture Plane Remix)” – HEALTH
Phantasthma” – Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti (2009 self-released) 7″
“Your Voice” – Santigold
“Bright Bliss” – Many Mansions
“I’m A Rainbow Too (Weird Round)” – Dj MARK BROWN
“I Can’t Stand It” – Telepathe

Stream the playlist here.

Literacy’s for Losers (Kanye West)

May 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

kanye+jesusIt’s true.

It might be their lack of pictures or their over all wordiness but books just aren’t doing it for Mr. West.

Rapper Kanye West does not read books or respect them but nevertheless he has written one that he would like you to buy and read.

Whether or not this includes scratch’n’sniffs, pop-ups, or choose your own adventures has yet to be confirmed; however, his book’s called “Thank You And You’re Welcome,” and includes:

an entertaining volume of ‘Kanye-isms’–the creative, humorous, and insightful philosophies and anecdotes used in creating his path to success. It captures the same wit, playful irony, and piercing insight found abundant in his lyrics.

Read more at Reuters.

BTW, this is a picture of Kanye West if he was Jesus…that’s all I have to say about that.

This is Boston, We’re Bottoms (Sex-iology)

May 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Well, well, not only does our weather fuck with us but so does everyone else.

custom_1243532605017_bottoms-tops-by-city-thesword-1

After long days at work involving trying not to throw up on the Green Line, dodging tourists and local crazies at Park Street, and finally trying to strategically jaywalk across Mass. Ave., we come home lay on our backs, let it happen, and maybe fall asleep.

This all according to a recent Craigslist survey by Gay blog, theSword.

Boston’s rough but let’s try to be more proactive where it counts: in bed. (At least we “better” than Houston.)

Health & Black Dice in Medford!

May 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

healthgetcolorcoverIs anyone there? Is anyone still reading? Well, for those who have hung on, JC&L is still (sort of) going strong.

This summer going to be pretty steady in music for those in the Boston area. The next great show will be in none other than Medford, MA, with one of the greatest line-ups I’ve seen in a while–Black Dice, Health, and Awesome Color.

The show’s scheduled for Monday, June 15th, at Medford’s Outside the Lines Studio at 7pm with only a $12 donation.

Health is also releasing a new album due in September, GET COLOR. The album art’s displayed but for the full track listing read more after the jump! ZING!

NOTE: according to Brooklyn Vegan Health and Awesome Color are scheduled to make an appearance but according to OLS only Black Dice, Many Mansions, Alec K. Redfearn and the Seizures, and Eat Cloud are playing.

Either way it should be pretty boss.

It’s a Beautiful Creature. It’s a North American Hipster.

April 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

emarceWere you ever fat, sad, still living with your parents, a huge T.B.S. fan, and fat? Yes?

Well, then you were probably “emo.” Don’t be ashamed. We all have the stretch marks and expired live journal/xanga accounts to prove it.

However, today’s lines have blurred and its difficult to correctly judge and classify your peers simply on appearance and music tastes.

Here’s where SomethingAwful.com saves the day. Their Field Guide to North American Hipsters Vol. 1 spells out exactly what you need to know when choosing sides.

Feeling awkward, annoyed but still a bit intrigued? Well, its probably because you oh so stereotypically fit into one of these neat categories.

But rest assured, when the economy completely collapses and the world finally comes to a bitter end, you’ll know what stupid suburban subculture you’ll fight for.

The Mummies are Back on TOUR!!!

April 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

mumm1_2Since their first show in 1989, The Mummies have been notorious for their wreckless antics on stage and their purely rock and roll sound.

Just recently announced, The Mummies are going back on tour!

These garage punks have already sold out two shows at Maxwell’s in New Jersey but there might still be hope. Last I heard, tickets are still available for the following day in Brooklyn’s Southpaw on June 10th.

“Remember that show in Spain last year? That one and only show we were gonna do? Yeah, well we lied. And if you don’t like it, put yer ear buds back in and go listen to yer Bob Fuckin’ Dylan again.” (via Brooklyn Vegan)

It should be awesome.

Brawl Street: Stewart Renders Cramer Speechless

March 13, 2009 · 1 Comment

kramer7It’s hard to believe the collapse of the global financial market was completely out of nowhere. It’s hard to believe some of the most educated people in the world thought it was okay to hand out so many bad mortgages and to defraud people out of their investments, retirements, and homes.

Yet, it’s unfair to exonerate the public from blame.

Yes, we shouldn’t believe everything we read but we do and knowing that, those all too important middle men in news media are responsible to be as honest as possible to their audience. Unfortunately, CNBC didn’t get that memo.

Thursday, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Jon Stewart went head to head with the slimy host of CNBC’s Mad Money with Jim Cramer.

As expected, viewers witnessed 30 painful minutes of Cramer saying more or less nothing which may or may not be attributed to an overall lack of legitimate answers. However, Stewart shined.

Stewart highlighted the sheer idiotic reasoning behind CNBC’s irresponsiblity and  inactivity in forewarning viewers of the impending crisis. What was most intreguing/ distrubing was the discrepancy between what CNBC is and what it markets itself as.

Check out the actual interview here and judge for yourself.
